Ibtisam MahamidIbtisam is a Palestinian living in northern Israel. Her primary focus is on improving relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel, also working with the status of women in both Arab and Jewish societies.
Most of her work is in the Palestinian community in Israel, especially amongst women whose position in Arab society is still repressed. She helps them build up their confidence, introducing them to people of the three major faiths - Islam, Christianity and Judaism. She is an executive committee member of the Interfaith Encounter Association and a co-founder of Anwar, a women's interfaith co-existence group. She is also active in Middleway, an NGO for the promotion of compassion and non-violence. Ibtisam is a woman in a patriarchal, traditional society that suffers from discrimination, high unemployment and much internal conflict. Her first contact with Jews was as a little girl accompanying her mother, who used to cook for Jewish households, where she made friends and learned Hebrew. Then she met a Jewish lady who came to her village of Fureidis. They clicked instantly and developed a deep friendship. Then they started a nationwide women's network called Peace Starts Inside.
What happens to your moneyYour donation is made by credit card through PayPal to Jerusalem Peacemakers. We transfer money from UK to Israel when sufficient funds have accumulated to minimise bank transfer and currency conversion costs, which are deducted from the total sum (about 5% for a sum over £100). Transfers are mostly made according to need: what the money will be spent on is discussed at every stage. Funds donated here go to no other destination than Ibtisam. Jerusalem Peacemakers deducts no charge.
Support communitiesIf you'd like to form a support community to contribute to Ibtisam's activities, click here. A support community is a group of friends or colleagues who band together to contribute a monthly sum. Ten people contributing £10 per month makes £1,200 per year!
AccountsIn 2005, we shall be making accounts available to donors on request, to give a sense of how donations are being used. Generalised accounts will be posted on this site too. Naturally, there will be a time-delay of a few months between donation and result. To protect donors and recipients and maintain confidentiality, some specific information will not be given in these accounts or will be disguised. If, as a donor, you wish to remain anonymous, please e-mail us at the time you make your donation, and your identity will be confidentially known only to one or two people in the Jerusalem Peacemakers team in UK.
