A few years ago I met Ibrahim Issa from the Hope Flowers School in Bethlehem - he is the Project Coordinator of the school and a remarkable peace activist. His and the school's philosophy is that 'peace starts with yourself'.
Hope Flowers School is a Palestinian school in El Khader, founded in 1984 in the south Bethlehem area of the West Bank (Palestine) and dedicated to education for coexistence, peace, non-violence and democracy. When possible the staff and students visit Jewish schools inside Israel and Jewish children visit Hope Flowers School.
There are joint ventures that Palestinian and Jewish pupils have taken part in, such as agricultural and arts projects but these are very difficult to keep going because of the impossible obstacles around movement into and out of Bethlehem for Jews and Palestinians alike. There is a programme of Jewish volunteers teaching students arts, computers and Hebrew. The school also sponsors a series of peace education workshops for Palestinian and Israeli educators - these are now taking place outside of the Holy Land due to travel restrictions between Israel and Palestine.
